You Saw This Coming.... Now Start Hyperventilating!

So Eight-Sters... We all know that some time this post was going to pop up, and I'd like to take the pleasure of starting it myself, then offering this canvas to another who wishes to paint on their interpretation of the (teenage) world's most interesting fleeting past-time... for the moment: watching a swoony R-Pattz on the big screen.

Yes, this is a post about Twilight. Well, at least he seems excited.

Having been shockingly delayed in my oogling of R-Pattz, I watched said movie yesterday (29th December). I entered with, let's face it, low expectations. I came out not quite satisfied (he only showed a strip of his bare chest!) but not so disappointed.

I could ramble on for hours, and then go into one of Disco Read's crazy rants about philosophical takes on Edward Cullen's biceps but I'd thought a reader's digest version would be better (especially if you're reading this on New Year's Day very tired).

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly:

THE GOOD:
It was indeed very exciting (as an avid Twilight and R-Pattz fan myself) to see the translation from text to film. I thought that the post-editing effects were ok, (but not ohmygoshfrickinfabulous) and that Bella was very very VERY pasty (even more so than vampy boy).
The baseball scene was good (good music), as was what I shall deem Ray Ban's scene... you know what I'm talking about!

The sweeping shots of the beautiful pine trees in the forests were nice.
And for a little Asian representation, I thought that Justin Chon (aka. Eric) was HILARIOUS! Definately didn't see his comedic streak through Meyer's books.
Charlie Swan, Bella's dad, was surprisingly funny with all his pepper spray talk.

THE BAD:
The whole 'mood' of the film. It was a bit deadpan to me - not helped by Kristen Stewart (aka. Bella) who could not crack a meaningful smile for the whole movie. Her acting was a bit lifeless to me.
Scene in the restaurant. SNOOZE! It should have been good, but I was focusing on eating popcorn the whole time.
Rosalie. Could Nikki Reed take an acting class? Or at least look the least bit invested in her role in anything.
Alice. Not chirpy enough, looked a bit aloof. Hope she gets better in the next film.

Edward's 'sparkle'. Any kid with a SFX program could have done that on his laptop.
Soundtrack, except for the Baseball scene, especially the song for the ending credits. What the?!

THE UGLY:
Jacob... oh JACOB! There was so much POTENTIAL! But no, there had to be that wig. That wig! I was gunning for you in Eclipse! Not anymore, it seems. The actor who plays Jacob, Taylor Lautner, is rumoured to be cut out of New Moon because producers don't think he's manly enough. I say, lose the wig before you do anything.

James. Ok so he's the bad guy, but Cam Gigandet is HOT HOT HOT! He played Volchuk in The O.C and in this movie he's a pasty freak with long hair.
(what could have been... point proven)

So what overall? IMDB gives Twilight 6.0/10. I'd say it ranges between 6.5 and 7/10. It wasn't THAT bad, and there are mixed reviews, but you've definately seen (and hoped for) better.

PS. Took me so long to find a picture of Edward with Ray Bans... APPRECIATE!

yay it's music time dance dance wiggle wiggle dance some more

It's almond almost time for a new year and normally this would mean lots of resolutions that are full to the brim with bullshite and mean even less! However, I have an exciting nuuu proposal that will save you all the hassle and haranguement and whatnot of waiting for that 11:59pm by....simply ignoring it!! Now sit back, cup your chins and stroke them ferociously (note: it would be wise to grow a beard before doing this, otherwise you run the risk of chinburn which is waaay nastier than sunburn or armpitburn or that nasty show Burn Notice) whilst muttering "Why didn't I think of that??!?!"

You see, my theory is that everything is relative. And since everything is relative, everything is different for everyone. And finally because this is so (and because I say it is so), everything must be subjective, and liable to change depending on your outlook and frame of mind. Although I may have ripped it orrf Einstein, I am re-appropriating it into our context of "nu yr's ev" - if you are ignoring this particular moment in time (and let's face it, time is just one of those things I know I'd rather not think about), then you are ignoring all of the conventions and obligations and celebrations etc. that come associated with it, and THUS TO YOU....IT IS NOT REAL!

If you just read all of that and thought "This is, like, totes irrelevant/boring/stupid/wackjobesque" you may be correct, but please remember that yes, I am in the exact state of mind as when I tried to proving that belonging is imaginary with mathematical induction. In other words, completely off my face - a major feat seeing as I have not actually required any sort of illicit dodgy mushroom to do it.

I feel that I have strayed far from my point long enough, so let us return to the real point of this - some music that I feel compelled I repeat COMPELLED to post on here on the grounds of my liking it veryy much.

Pre-stocktake Sale Heads-up

I went to Macquarie Center today for some last-minute Christmas shopping & along the way found just a few cheap buys that I thought you'd might like to know, in case you wanted to get one right at the start of the stocktake sale season.

Like this Melissa Odabash Havana swimsuit?

Well it's £111 at net-a-porter.com & currently featured in Vogue. You can get one similar (but in black) at Glassons for only $15. It's pretty good quality, & if you're prepared for a similar version in a nicer black & white print (which from what I've seen at the fabric print studio is definitely a big trend for SS09/10), you can buy it for ~$36.

Check out these Burberry heels...
If you really want to splurge £289.36 on them, you can, but if you're feet are small enough & can fit into a size 37 or a 39, you can buy a similar pair of heels from Rubi shoes (opposite Cotton On in Macquarie Center) for only $5 - of course they aren't exactly the same, but it's definitely a good buy. And while I'm at it, just a headsup that the whole rock-chic look is coming back, so prepare the studs, liquid eyeliner, black leather jackets & skinny pants.

+ I hope everyone has a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!
>>>Please check out Hurley Who's Christmas message below :)

PS Anyone up for stocktake/post-Christmas shopping? I'm thinking of going to Paddington some Saturday & possibly go city shopping for the umpteenth time, so if you're interested, just email me

Transform Homelessness

Recently organisations Mission Australia and Bayer have pitched into this new campaign to help transform homelessness. Just off their website:
  • there are over 105,000 Australians who are homeless each night
  • almost 45,000 homeless people are under 24
  • more than 7,000 Australians are a part of homeless families

So what are they asking for?
Well, all you have to do is make a pair of butterfly wings (just select from a few on their website) which look like the one above, and for each one created, Bayer and Mission Australia will donate $1 to help the homeless on our streets.

You can visit their website at http://www.transformhomelessness.com.au/Default.aspx or alternatively clicking the butterfly pic above.

Architecture

Take a look at THIS:

(and go on to look at Part II - the fun continues)

Featured in this 'Strange Buildings of the World' site is none other than the Atlantis Hotel (remember, that crazy hotel in Dubai that had imported dolphins?) I'm sad to say that only one building from Australia made it - and it wasn't even the Opera House! (it was Federation Square in Melbourne).

Enjoy the architecture!

Transformations

What you are looking at here is 6 different shots from ONE photo shoot of the SAME model Eniko Mihalik. This was in the November 2008 edition of Paris Vogue.
How did they do it? Makeup? Lighting? Fast-forward ageing accelerator machine?

Killer Heels - Spring/Summer 2009

I absolutely LOVE this season's SS09 accessories - we're currently seeing the return of the adventurous, the fringe, the 80's and even a hint of surrealism! - Take a look for yourself:
Louis Vuitton (above)- which funnily enough reflects my current state of mind

John Galliano - one of my favourite designers of all time; once again, he doesn't fail to surpise
(JG above & below)

A more conservative Jimmy Choo shown above; seems that there is a return to the fringe/Indian trend & love the bar...maybe minus the orange though

Giambattista Valli (above) - beautifully proportioned & destined to kill but tone calves.

A Dries von Noten heel above; love the gold detail, would be quite comfy too, which is a plus.

Going retro with Derek Lam- hint that the 80's is coming back, so cinch those skirts!

Christian Louboutin...I'd have to say the red soles would make it even more of a statement.

love love love this one - another Christian Louboutin; the ruffles are AMAZING

Christian Dior - which has named this one of their 'goddess heels' :)

Chanel - going geometric (keep those prints for summer)

Calvin Klein - showing clean & comfy is the way to go

Burberry - nice gradation of tone; colours are beautiful & proportion well considered
Brian Atwood- loving his work atm, although I'd like to see this one actually worn!

Another Brian Atwood (above & below); crazier...it seems

Where would be without Balenciaga? - monochromes indicative of the return of minimalism? what do you guys think?

Crazy yet amazing Alexander McQueen number...loving this boot :)

Lastly, a beautiful Alexandra Neel...it's so pretty!
haha, I could go on forever,

Only in Dubai can this EVER happen...

You're looking at the Atlantis Hotel in Dubai, also known as The Palm. It cost $1.5bn to build. Its location is almost as extravagant as the hotel itself - it is situated on a man-made sand island in the shape of a palm tree:

It has got 1373 'spacious' rooms (and I don't doubt that) and 166 suites. The 'Lost Chambers Suites' is literally among the aquatic life. A night at the hotel's best suite will set you back an odd $20 000 or so. That is, if you have that sort of spare change... (but that room does have a gold-leaf 18-seat dining table, so it's worth it).
Check out the Poseidon Suite:

I think it would get unsettling at night... not to mention scary sharing your space with sharks and stingray.

We all know that Dubai is the up-and-coming global city, with the rate of construction rivalling and even exceeding those budding urban centres like Shanghai. Those people in the UAE just can't pump out those multi-billion buildings fast enough... Other construction ideas include an indoor ski slope, the world's first 7-star hotel, more man-made islands, and the world's tallest skyscraper.

Anyways, back to the Atlantis Hotel, their opening gala on the 20th November was reputed to cost upwards of $30m - the world's most expensive private party where 2 000 of the world's celebrities were invited. (Hello Kylie, who got paid $4m to perform for one hour) It also involved a $6m fireworks display and the party guests were given free accommodation.

Of course, the Atlantis isn't only a hotel... It's a mini playground.

Here is the Leap of Faith waterslide - looks pretty hardcore to me...

And after you've been catapaulted down the Leap of Faith, you enter the inner tubes of a shark-infested lagoon... on the inside looking out...

One word.... WOW!!!! How very once-in-a-lifetime...

But that's not all the marine life... Here in the Dolphin Bay, you can have 'shallow-water interactions' (sounds fishy... no pun intended) with two dozen bottlenose dolphins, specially flown in from the Solomon Islands. I'm not joking. Apparently this caused a lot of controversy. (I wonder why... would it be the 30hr flight?)

And if you feel like eating, rather than interacting, their Ossiano restaurant offers great views of your next meal.

This is part of their giant open-air tank with over 65 000 fish and other marine species.

And this is the Atlantis Spa, where you can unwind (if you haven't already been doing that while being catapaulted in a shark-infested lagoon, that is)

The Atlantis Hotel - my next holiday destination. (What recession?!)
